Decorating Your Home Office

Decorating Your Home Office

Your home office is your sanctuary when you need to put your head down and concentrate on the job at hand.

If you are lucky enough to have the space, then a home office is a great thing to have. A home office allows one to keep work life separate from home life (even if you do work from home). At Sasi Wallpaper we often get asked what is the best way to decorate your home office, the simple answer is that there is no hard and fast rule when it comes to decorating any space, whether it’s your living room, your bedroom, or your office, but there are a few things to consider if you are planning a home office.

As they say in the real-estate industry, location is everything. You want to make sure that you’ve chosen the right room to dedicate your home office to. It is also important that the furniture in your home office be placed correctly so that you can get the most out of your space. If you are easily distracted we would suggest not having your desk facing an open door that people walk past frequently as this may divert your attention away from important work. We suggest creating a corner desk space, close to a window so that you get the advantage of natural light. If you don’t have a window at hand, then we suggest hanging an interesting picture, or even better- hanging a wallpaper mural in front of your desk. By creating a feature wall, you are encouraging yourself to take breaks and look away from that dreaded PC screen and give your mind time to relax and regenerate.

Also, important to your home office is the choice of colour pallet. Forget “office beige”: you need a colour that gets your work-motor humming. For some people, that’s a bright, cheery colour like orange or lime green. Others need a calming shade like botanical green or sea foam blue to perform. (Find out more about how certain colours can affect your mood here), otherwise you can’t go wrong with a great wallpaper to bring some brightness to your work space.

Choose homey accessories to place in your office. Unless you’re going for a contemporary look, choose extras that enhance the comfy feeling of your home office, like a pretty mug for a pencil holder, trendy notepads and sticky notes, and a decorative waste basket. Wrap your bulletin board in a gorgeous fabric, and hide utilitarian bookshelves behind curtains made from the same material. Hang inspirational prints on the walls, whether that’s simply your kids’ framed artwork or a classic painting.

Let’s face it, there’s not much you can do to beautify the computer, printer, and phone, but you can hide unsightly cords. Start by making sure your equipment is close to outlets and easy to access if you need to unplug. Encase cords on the desk in a pretty fabric cord cover and feed the cords into a desk grommet, a plastic or metal cap that helps guide cords through a hole in the desk and hides them underneath. Tame the cord jungle on the floor with cord winders, tubing, or a wire organizer that’s attached to the desk and lifts the cords off the floor.

And remember just because it’s your office at home, it doesn’t mean that it should be boring! For more decorating hints and tips, take a look at our blog and find out what wallpaper can do for you!
